What’s the M.A.D challenge?
M.A.D stands for "Making A Difference." It’s about getting in the habit of doing one simple gesture to make a difference for a better future, one with less plastic pollution. That’s why we created the M.A.D challenge. It’s simple: If you see plastic that has been discarded carelessly, don’t turn and look the other way. Instead, we challenge you to pick it up and dispose of it properly. Yes, we know you didn’t drop it, or dispose of it incorrectly..., but you did see it. And now that you know better, it’s not fair for other creatures and our future generations have to suffer consequences because of the careless decisions others made. Start small and pick up at least one thing throughout your day. Or, reduce plastic waste by reusing your plasticware You might even find yourself refusing single-use plastic. You would be surprised how much a simple action can actually make a difference. That water cap or plastic bag you picked up, or that plastic straw you refused helped relieve an innocent creature from the dangers of plastic pollution and helped preserve the ocean. We bet it also made you feel good inside. If you want to go all out and pick up every single thing that you see, go for it and share with us! Remember you don’t have to be an elite athlete or a superhuman to take on the M.A.D challenge. You just have to care enough and start with one thing. If you care enough alone, imagine what our compassion can accomplish together? A clean ocean is just the beginning!
Why should You take it on?
Did you know? The ocean is responsible for 70% of the oxygen we breathe! If you breathe air, you can actually help make a difference. At the rate plastic pollution is going:
Over 100,000 marine creatures are dying every year.
~1 million seabirds die every year!
It's estimated that by 2050, 99% of seabirds would have ingested plastic.
It's estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish!
When picking up plastic it's important to be safe! Wear gloves if needed, and do not put your life in danger to pick up plastic debris. You will make a bigger difference if you are alive and healthy to contribute!
How can I participate in it?
There are three ways to participate in The M.A.D Challenge: pick something up and dispose of it correctly, reduce and reuse your plastic consumption, or simply refuse single use plastic wherever you go. You can also do all three. Just make sure you share it with us on social media and tag us! @GoOrvel #MakingADifference #TheMADChallenge #GoOrvel
See plastic? You can help reduce pollution, just:
Pick it up and "bin it!"
Not all plastic can be recycled so look out for the recycle symbol
Recycle it if it can be recycled, or throw it in the trash.
Refuse single use plastic
Snap a shot and tag us in it. We love to see our community #MakingADifference!
How can I share?
Tag us! DM us! Post it! Our social media handles are all: @goorvel and we follow the hashtags #themadchallenge #makingadifference #getmad and #goorvel.
What's Bin it?
We define "bin it" as dipossing the item responsibly and where it belongs. If it's recyclable, it goes in the recycle bin. If it's not recyclable, it goes in the trash bin. When in doubt, just throw it in the trash, A.K.A. away from the beautiful oceans.
